Avianca Launches 23 New International Routes in Bid to Capture Traffic to South, Central America
Colombian flag carrier Avianca announced this week that it would continue its network expansion, making one of the biggest in Latin America even larger with the launch of 23 new international routes.
This comes after the carrier inaugurated six domestic and international routes already this year: Medellín, Colombia to Cancún, Mexico; Medellín to Punta Cana, Mexico; Miami to San José, Costa Rica; San Salvador, El Salvador to Ontario, Calif.; and from Santa Marta to Pereira, Colombia and Orlando.
The countries with the highest growth thanks to the availability of new non-stop flights will be Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador.
The Colombian carrier considerably grows its offering of direct flights from different regions of the country: Cali, Medellín and Bucaramanga, among others, putting special focus on airports that have operations that are more efficient to offer a consistent and on-time service to passengers.
From Colombia, travelers will continue to enjoy the most robust offering of itineraries available from Avianca and will now have 13 new direct routes from Cali to New York, Cancun, Mexico City, San José and Quito; from Medellín to Aruba, Mexico City, Orlando, San José, Quito and Guayaquil; from Bucaramanga to Miami, and for its part Bogotá will see the launch of a direct flight to Toronto, Canada.
The highest growth in Colombia will occur mainly in cities other than Bogotá due to the persistent operational limitations of its air terminal related to a high influx of government traffic and other non-regular aviation, as well as limitations stemming from infrastructure.
In addition, it should be remembered that, between June and July, the authority has declared the a Ground Delay Program 92 times, affecting more than 465,390 passengers in the industry on more than 3,500 separate flights.
Despite this challenging situation, Avianca has the firm intention of maintaining its competitive position in Bogotá even as it looks to expand elsewhere in the midst of further setbacks.
